And so on. This does not work for everyone, and the closer you get to your true size, the more comfortable and supported you will be, but this is a great tip as an alternative and sometimes explains why many women get their estimates wrong! If a bra is too tight on the back, but the cup is fine, remember: go up a back size but go down a cup size if you do! The same works in reverse: go down a back size, go up a cup size!

How do I make sure a bra fits me the best it can?

Fitting tips you’ll not want to miss!

  • Lean forward as if you were touching your toes, when you have it on, which helps the breast to settle correctly into the cup
  • The ideal fit is to fasten the bra back on the middle hook. If the bra you are trying is too tight or too loose on any hook, change the back size of the bra you are trying as the chart guides you
  • The bra should sit firmly on the rib cage
  • Make sure the centre front of the bra between the cups is sitting firmly and comfortably flat against your chest
  • Ensure any underwire is not resting on soft breast tissue but sitting nicely on your ribcage. If that isn’t happening, go to the next larger cup size
  • Adjust the bra straps to longer or shorter depending on support and comfort needs
  • Check your side view, or ‘profile’ in the mirror. If the brest is ‘spilling out’ over the bra, increase your cup size. If flowing out of the sides, go up one cup size or look for a fuller covering cup or style Bra sizes for women fluctuate monthly, remember this when trying or ordering a bra!

How do I measure myself for a bra?

Actual sizes of a bra may vary, due to manufacturers, designs, fabrics, structure, and bra type, so buying a bra in person, try at least 10 bras on so you can begin to get an idea of what size you generally take and then you will know what to ask for online with a little more accuracy.

Remember: the number is your back width; the letter is your breast size!

When you are measuring yourself, always put the tape measure next to the skin, not over any clothing or bra.

Step 1
To find your back size (this is the measurement that reads 32, 34, 36, 38 etc) hold the tape measure firmly; measure directly under the breasts and straight across and around your back. When you have a number, add 4 inches to an even number and 5 inches to an odd number. T
he end total will be your back size.
Step 2
To measure your cup size, (this is the A, B, C, D, E part of the size on the label) measure around your back and around the fullest part of the bust in inches. This must be a loose measurement, do not flatten the breasts while doing so, or pull the tape too tightly.

Step 3
Subtract the back size (STEP 1) from the second measurement (STEP 2). The DIFFERENCE determines your cup size, according to the chart below:

DIFFERENCE CUP SIZE
Same A
1" B
2" C
3" D
4" E
5" F
6" G

Some designs, even of the same manufacturer, “run on the large side” or “run on the small size” different to what a label may tell you. But if you find that as a rule, one set size generally fits you, there is a tip to help you still find a fit that works for you, even if ‘your size’ is out of stock.

Many women can use either one or another range of back size. For instance, if you fit a 32B bra, and sometimes do the back up on the loosest hook, you’ll most likely be able to get away with comfortably wearing a 34A size on a tighter setting.

Just remember the rule: when you go up a back a back size, you go down a cup size. Larger back size, smaller cup required!

Hot secrets for maximizing your impact from professional lingerie stylists for the stars!

  • If you shorten your bra straps just a little beyond your normal comfort zone, you’ll increase your cleavage
  • Same goes for fastening at the back
  • If you are wearing a corset, try this top styling tip: wear a co-ordinating bra underneath it (as long as it has pretty straps and a decorative cup edging) in matching colours to the corset. You may loose the strapless effect of the corset, but you will not only gain a ‘boudoir’ look but if you position your corset to hit the bust line mid-breast, you will give yourself an instant boob job!
  • If you get adventurous, try the ‘bratini’ look: combine a quarter cup and a full cup underneath from the same range of lingerie in matching or complimentary colours, for the Moulin Rouge look which will also boost the boobs!
